Welcome to Hatton Elementary School! I am so glad to serve the families of this community. We are a wonderful little school of about 265 students ranging from Pre-K to 6th grade in Leighton, Alabama.

I am the school counselor at Hatton. I serve all of our students and provide A.C.E.S. (Academic, Career, Emotional, Social) lessons to each classroom once a month, work with students one-on-one for individual counseling, and plan small group counseling sessions on topics like friendship, appropriate behaviors, etc.

Among these responsibilities at Hatton Elementary, I am also the facilitator for the Healing Place Grief Support Group and serve on the CIP Team, Handbook committee, RTI Committee, Technology (Web-site liason) committee. I am the Newsletter creator. I wear many hats here at Hatton Elementary. We are excited to bring back the UNA Project T.I.M.E. Mentor Program, which is our partnership with the UNA Social Work program that provides mentors for select students. This year, we will launch a new program called Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) to help put fathers, uncles, grandfathers, stepdads, etc. into the hallways in our school to provide support for our school and to combat bullying. Thank you to Riversouth Designs in Leighton for sponsoring this program!

We will be celebrating School Attendance Awareness Month in September, Career Awareness in November, Red Ribbon Week (Saying No to unhealthy choices for our bodies) in October, and The Great Kindness Challenge in January.

As the counselor at HES, I will encouage the following mindsets for all my students:

1. Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional, and physical well-being

2. Self-confidence in ability to succeed

3. Sense of belonging in the school environment

4. Understanding that postsecondary education and life-long learning are necessary for long-term career success.

5. Belief in using abilities to their fullest to achieve high-quality results and outcomes

6. Positive attitudes toward work and learning.

A little bit about me:

I graduated in 2005 from the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico with my elementary education degree. I taught public and private schools for 3-1/2 years. I graduated from the University of North Alabama with my master's degree in school counseling and have been a school counselor for 4 years now. I am currently enrolled at the University of North Alabama to work on my Educational Specialist degree so that I can better serve the students, parents, staff, and administration of Hatton Elementary School.

I grew up in the south as the child of a preacher's kid. I have lived in Muscle Shoals for a total of 15 years of my life and attended Muscle Shoals High School. I have 2 daughters, Savannah and Korah. We have the cutest dog in the world named Ember, a hairless, one-eyed cat named Sy,  one chubby guinea pig named Gizmo, and a Ball Python named Percy Jackson. We are also a foster home for Bama Bully Rescue and for the Colbert County Animal Shelter.

I am here to serve all my families. Please let me know what I can do for your family!
