Mike Hubka

The Art Department at Colbert County High School recently received special instruction from Mr. Mike Hubka, a retired college professor and Mechanical Designer.  During his teaching career Hubka taught at NWSCC, the University of North Alabama and Shoals Christian.  His 20 year experience as a Mechanical Designer gives him incredible knowledge to provide students.

The purpose of Hubka’s visit to Colbert County High School was to assist students using the Solid Works software, which was implemented into Kim Lander’s art classroom this year. During his visit, Hubka explained that Solid Works, a 3-D CAD design software, can create everything you use on a daily basis. He also stated that even if a student does not go into an artistic career path, students can learn a wide variety of terminology from using Solid Works.

According to Mrs. Landers, her 8th grade art students respond well to the software and are also starting to pick up on the terminology. “They are getting familiar with the early stages of mechanical design,” she explained.  Landers also noted that students are only at the beginning of creating with this software.  Once they get comfortable, they will be able to create and design really incredible projects.  According to Emily Spice, who wishes to pursue a career as an Animator, “The software is really cool to use. Even as an animator, it will be useful in my career.”  Visits from industry professionals, such as Mr. Mike Hubka, make learning technical software easier and relatable to the real world.
