Message from the Principal

It is my honor to share in the mission and vision of CHS. I started my career in the classroom, so I understand what it takes to be a dedicated and effective teacher.  Our teachers are the BEST and it is my pleasure to make the journey with them as we lead our students to SUCCESS.  I invite you to tour our facilities.  I am confident that you will see first hand what a wonderful atmosphere CHS offers.  Also, please tour our entire website and become familiar with all the opportunities at CHS. I maintain an open door policy so please feel free to contact me.

Continuing the Pursuit of SUCCESS at CHS

·      ACCESS/IVC Lab – Our ACCESS/IVC Lab is up and functional.  We are expanding the ACCESS courses to include Foreign Languages, Advanced Science Courses, etc.  These courses are perfect for our school because it allows us to offer a larger number of advanced courses on a web-based system. Contact Julia Gray our counselor to register.

·      Credit Recovery through NovaNet is a successful program.  Parents the program will be offered Monday-Friday during the school year from 7:00-7:40 am in the library.  Please contact the principal if you have additional questions or would like to register your child in Credit Recovery.

vGrade Recovery will be an option for students that have not mastered objectives in a core course.  Parents we will begin this program at the end of the first six weeks. It will operation the same hours as Credit Recovery. Please contact the principal if you have additional questions or would like to register your child in Grade Recovery.

vZeros Aren’t Appropriate (ZAP) is a program designed to encourage students to complete their homework assignments with their best effort.  Please click on the ZAP link below for more information.  Students assigned to ZAP will be required to stay after school on Wednesday from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.

v  Targeted Instruction has been implemented for all students that are having difficulty passing the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.  In this program, students are focusing on the objectives they have not mastered through a “double-dosing” approach.

vSTAR Reading and MathCHS is actively working to test students using Star Reading and Math in order to address each student’s individual needs and help them reach grade level.

·      Positive Behavior Support Systems – A new county-wide program established to reward students for positive behavior.  Please note the expectations are BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE, BE RESOURCEFUL.  See the CHS School-Wide Expectations for our students.

·      Student of the Month – Selections will begin this school year.  Students we are looking for the best modeling our character traits each month.  Teachers will nominate students and the principal will draw names from teacher nominations.  There will be one junior high representative and one senior high representative.  It could be you next.

·      Mentoring Program will begin in 2009-2010.  Selected Senior and Junior students and volunteer teachers will meet weekly to focus on grades, attendance and behavior.

·      Free Reading Time and Library Visits – We have a renewed focus on reading this school year.  Our plan is to ensure all students spend at least 40 minutes per month in the school library and at least 10 minutes each school day participating in recreational reading.

·      AHSGE Prep/Remediation -  We have classes designed to prepare students for the AHSGE that will focus on our 10th grade students and remediation for our 11th and 12th grade students.  They will have a variety of resources such as ACCESS, NovaNet, USA Test Prep, American Book Company, etc.
